The journey of relationship with God can take many forms and use many different methods of being with God. Traditionally Anglican Christians have seen these as falling into a number of different areas, including prayer, reading the Bible, worship, the sacraments and service. Sometimes this is expressed in terms of a rule of life. Some people find that they get valuable assistance from working with a spiritual director, spiritual companion or soul friend.
This section of the Anam Cara Community website aims to provide associates and other interested people with information about some ‘tools for the Journey’ they might find useful. It is important to say that none is better than another, and none is right for everyone. Most people find that they need a balance of different ‘activities’, some of which become more or less important over time.
It is important that the method or activity doesn’t become a hindrance to being with God. None of us does anything perfectly – as Thomas Merton prayed:
My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that my desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. (Thomas Merton)
So, in this section you can find some guides to the tools. On each page you will find a list of further resources, such as books, websites or people to contact. If you would like further assistance, guidance or support, please don’t hesitate to contact your parish priest or the Community, and we will do our best to link you with someone.
